AB - A Tentative Method for Translation Evaluation Kim, Jeong-Woo(Kyungnam University)This paper has two main purposes: first, to prepare reasonable criteria for evaluating the translation product; second, to suggest some emphatic points of translation education by making use of the results from the above evaluation and its analysis. As for the comprehension of the source text, students whose products were used as materials of our analysis have revealed some weak points such as double preposition phrases and negative quantity expressions. They are particularly needed for translation drills related to the concrete speech situation. In this context, future-translators should keep in mind the proposition that all translation be carried out in context, whether it be on a sentence level or on a word level. As for the expression of the target language, students are required to practice written composition on a certain subject in order to recognize and improve their concepts of paragraph and its unified thought. In addition, they cannot ignore the four linguistic norms of Korean, which form the final output of the translation product. As shown in the correlation of statistics, the two main capacities, that of comprehension of the source language and that of expression by the target language should be dealt with under a proper balance.
