ABSTRACT

Case-study of Mistranslations in the Korean Subtitles of the Japanese Soap Opera “Summer Snow”Lee' Jwajija(Kyung Hee University)TV and film subtitles instantly appear and disappear on the screen, making it almost impossible to compare the spoken words to the subtitles. But thanks to the development of IT technology, Japanese soap operas can be easily downloaded in Korea. This technology not only offers Koreans easy access to the dramas but also the ability to actively analyze the translations.Generally Japanese soap operas are translated by amateur translation groups instead of professionals. Errors are often found in their translations. This paper studied the Korean script of “Summer Snow” to compare the actual dialogue in the opera and the Korean subtitle. It analyzes the patterns of mistakes in vocabulary, idiomatic expressions, styles, cultural background, omissions, and fluency, and seeks to find their causes. As the translations are discourse-oriented they inevitably reflect the language habits of the TV stars and include many words of foreign origin and newly-coined words, all of which are frequent sources of translation errors.
