ABSTRACT

Nowadays into-Korean-translations of foreign literary works are frequently assessed in articles, books and newspapers. It is a positive phenomenon because active feedback from readers contributes to improving the quality of translation. But it is disappointing that the main focus of assessment has been to find translation errors and failures. Discussions on the translation of foreign literary works need to be changed from error analysis to criticism. This paper deals with several points, which should contribute to the a forementioned paradigm shift: translation of foreign literary work is a literary work itself, not a copy of foreign literary work; translation error analysis is too microscopic; beliefs about what is 'good' translation can differ between translators and assessors; assessors may not have the necessary capabilities to assess translations; revision work done by publishing companies has to be considered in translation assessment.
