AB - This paper considers ways to develop criteria for translating quotation marks between Korean and English news reports, with the goal for application to translation classrooms. Research on translation of quotation or quotation marks between the language pair seems rare in news reports, particularly for training purposes (exceptions include Oh 2008, Kang 2008b). As a translator trainer and researcher, the author feels the need to produce a reference point, however rough it may be, with hopes to provide a more systematic approach to translation in this subfield. The paper uses Geoff Thompson (1996)’s four dimensions of quotation as a theoretical framework. The data for this paper include 240 news articles from three Korean newspapers and two American newspapers, as well as translations of one of the Korean newspapers on the topic of the two US-North Korea summit meetings held in 2018 and 2019. The findings of the study suggest that quotation marks in headlines of the source text may be deleted from the target text when the quoted part cannot be found in the body of the text, which also applies to quotes from an unspecified source as well as full quotes used with a subjective reporting verb.
