ABSTRACT

In this article, I seek to look beyond the surface of texts and gain a deeper understanding of the phenomena surrounding the translation of Dong Mong Seun Seup (童蒙先習), a national textbook for the youth of the Joseon Dynasty in Korea. Drawing from my own experience of translating and publishing Dong Mong Seun Seup, I observed the entire translation process to uncover the factors that affected translation decisions and outcomes. Through this exploration, I illuminated the intricate interplay among source texts, target texts, target culture, translators, and socio-cultural contexts within the framework of Descriptive Translation Studies (DTS). This descriptive approach helps outline key aspects of the translation, including the translator's motives, the purpose and principles of the translation, the reception of the translation by the target reader, and the function of the translation in the target culture, among others. These imperceptible elements at play in the translation process were partially reconstructed based on the author’s self-observation.
