AB - This study examines a retranslated version of One Up on Wall Street, a globally recognized essay co-authored by legendary fund manager Peter Lynch and financial columnist John Rothchild. Celebrating the 35th anniversary of its publication in the US, this article explores how Kun Lee, a business book translator and former fund manager, retranslated the work in the South Korean context and strategically used it to gain symbolic capital in the field. To better examine his multi-faceted interactions with other agents and social structures, the study adopted Pierre Bourdieu’s conceptual frameworks. Leveraging his financial expertise, the translator proposed the retranslation to the publisher and adopted simplification as his primary translation strategy. He also mobilized social capital by referring industry experts to the publisher to write endorsements for the book. More importantly, his strategic orientations involved creating paratexts that helped to reinforce his image as a ‘translator of investment classics.’ His agency contributed to the successful reception of his translations within South Korea's investment circles and among the general public. By adopting a sociological approach to a non-literary work, this article aims to broaden the horizon of the existing literature on retranslation.
