ABSTRACT

This study aims to analyze the use of cohesive devices by graduate students in a translation and interpreting program, utilizing Halliday and Hasan’s (1976) framework of cohesion. The analysis draws upon student responses to an “op-ed translation” exam, which formed part of the 2022 graduation examination for the Department of Korean-Chinese Translation and Interpretation at Chung Ang University’s Graduate School of International Studies. The study recommends that translator training programs place greater emphasis on deepening students’ theoretical understanding of cohesion mechanisms, expanding their contrastive linguistic knowledge of both source and target languages, and incorporating a quantitative evaluation of cohesive device usage in assignments. These steps would help students critically assess cohesion in source texts and produce more cohesive translations that align with target-language norms.
