ABSTRACT

Netflix, a global over-the-top (OTT) service provider, employs pivot translation—using English as an intermediary language—to offer subtitles, movie titles, and other resources in multiple languages. This study investigates how Netflix adapts intertextual references when translating foreign movie titles into Korean, with a particular emphasis on the effects of pivot translation on the intertextuality inherent in these titles. Utilizing Venuti’s (2009) framework, the study analyzes the intertextual relationships between the original non-English titles, the English pivot texts, and their Korean counterparts. The analysis reveals that some original titles lose or alter their intertextuality, while new intertextual connections sometimes emerge in the pivot texts. These findings carry two significant implications. First, Netflix’s approach to preserving the intertextuality of original movie titles helps disseminate the Western mainstream culture. Second, the modification of intertextuality through pivot translation reinforces the hegemonic role of English in global media.
