AB - This study examines the translation of women’s language in Han Kang’s novel Chaesikjuuija (literally, “The Vegetarian”) into Chinese and Russian. While Korean and Chinese share historical and cultural similarities, such as Confucian traditions and patriarchal social systems, their linguistic structures differ significantly. Russian, as a member of an entirely different language family, diverges even further from Korean. Although Korean lacks explicit grammatical markers for feminine and masculine language, it does feature gender-based linguistic distinctions. This study compares Chaesikjuuija with its two Chinese translations and one Russian translation, exploring how the translators used strategies such as addition, deletion, description, modulation, and amplification to convey women’s language. In addition, the study reveals the influence of male and female translators’ perspectives on the translations. By highlighting the cultural distance reflected in the translation of women’s language, the study underscores the role of translator intervention and the importance of gender-related linguistic analysis in translation research.
