The Effect of Career Group Coaching Using NLP on the Variables Related to Career Decisions in High School Students

ABSTRACT

The purpose of this study was to perform and test the effect of a career group counseling program using NLP coaching for enhancing career decision-making self-efficacy and career identity, and reducing career barriers in high school students. 24 students(12 males and 12 females) in a high school located in Chungbuk province participated in this study and they were randomly assigned into two groups, 12 students in the treatment group and 12 students in the control group with same sex ratio. The treatment group was treated with the career group counseling program once a week and for 7 weeks, but the control group was not treated. Participants were asked to complete a questionnaire including scales such as Career Decision-Making Self-Efficacy Scale, Identity Scale, and Korean Career Indecision Inventory, before, right after and 2 months later the program. Repeated measure ANOVA and t-test were conducted to test the difference between the scores of before and right after, and before and 2 months later scales using SPSS 18.0 version. Also, we analysed the self-reports of participants and teachers after the program for suppling the limitation of a quantitative study. The result showed that the levels of career decision-making self-efficacy and career identity were increased and career barriers was reduced in the treatment group. Also the result of analysis of the self-reports of participants and teachers after the program showed that there were the enhancement of conviction for career and confidence on the response of participants in the treatment group. This effects lasted up to 2 months later. These results imply that the career group counseling program using NLP coaching can enhance career decision-making self-efficacy, which consequently can increase the ability of planing and the levels of confidence and positive thinking. Also, the career group counseling program using NLP coaching should be studied in various school settings and provided to students in different school grades.
