How to Teach/Study English/Translation? (I)A Non-Theoretical Introduction to Educating English/Translation SpecialistsPark, Kyung-Il (Kyung Hee University)From a practical point of view, our nation's international competitiveness in sciences, culture, industry, economy, politics and diplomacy, etc. is, to our regrets, heavily dependent upon the nation's English literacy, that is, advanced capabilities of reading, writing and speaking English. This suggests that in a sense it is vital for the nation to improve its English literacy to a degree that this age of globalization and exploding information requires. Nevertheless, it seems that our national educational systems have failed to meet this vital need to provide a proper English education for both the general public and specialists, which in turn resulted in the degraded, and even corrupted state of our translation culture, polluted with all kinds of mistranslations. In this paper, the author will examine problematics of our present translation culture and propose an experiential, non-theoretical English teaching/learning method aimed at educating English as well as translation specialists, both of which this age urgently demands. The author will argue that the problem of educating English/translation specialists needs be dealt with as an integrated one.

A Tentative Manual to Translate Scientific Texts from English into KoreanKim, Jeong-Woo(Kyungnam University) This paper is to formalize a tentative manual on some techniques possibly applied to translating science texts from English into Korean. As science texts have their own raison d' tre to communicate knowledge and information to readers, the translator should take it into consideration above all. In this context, what's the most important in the translation of science texts is how to translate technical terms. The related topics are summarized as follows:

English-Korean Translation of Movement ExpressionsLee, Young-Ok Kyung Hee UniversityThis paper is a study on the difference between Korean and English in the way of expressing location movement with a view to applying the results in translation. The difference can be basically attributed to the difference in the language type of the two languages: Korean is an action-dominant, path-oriented language and English is an object-dominant, co-event language. This difference is reflected in the way of expressing various actions or behaviors accompanying the movement from one place to another. It is also shown that such a difference in language type generates other language-specific features for each language: Korean tends to use combined verbs and adverbs for movement, while English tends to use single verbs followed by prepositional phrases for expressing the direction or destination of the movement.The dominant use of verbal expressions in Korean for the situation for which English uses nominal expressions has been shown to be related to the basic difference in the language type of the two languages and the difference in the basic word order: Korean, S-O-V and English, S-V-O. Thus, the use of pro-forms or deletion as well as various constructions that require nominals in English, like prepositions, transitive verbs, obligatory subjects can be compared with the case of Korean and can be explained as reflecting the basic difference in language type or cognitive orientation between the two languages. Such a clarification of the characteristics of each language in comparison with its counterpart in translation situation should be the first step before starting the main task of translation.
