ABSTRACT

This study analyzes translation standards that are adopted by Canada, China, the European Union, the ISO and the United States to identify their implications for possible standardization of translation service requirements in Korea. It was found that who is a major translation customer in a market influenced the content of the region’s translation standard. It caused differences among the standards in their description of translation processes, human resources and more. However, the standards shared the common goal of offering quality translation services, thus protecting and satisfying translation customers. The analysis has following implications for Korea: A translation standard should incorporate needs of the nation’s major translation customers; Standardization should be driven by the translation academia and the Korean Agency for Technology and Standards. As a standard is a public good in nature, a translation standard of Korea, if introduced, will benefit both translation customers and translation service providers.
