AB - Translations from the same source text are often perceived differently by readers mostly due to stylistic features. Defined as style markers, these features can be analyzed through various linguistic units. Among other elements, point of view is worthwhile exploring particularly in literary narratives as prior research posits that it has substantial effects on the way a text is read and received by readers. Against this backdrop, this study seeks to examine how the distinctive use of point of view in The Great Gatsby is translated in two of its Korean translations through a comparative analysis drawing on Simpson’s (1993) model with modality and verba sentiendi incorporated as key style markers. Findings reveal that the two translators make distinct choices in terms of modality and verba sentiendi, which may evoke different feelings and responses for readers. Further analysis into the metadata of the translations indicates that the translators’ proclaimed strategies and their professional backgrounds are part of the factors that influence the translator’s style.
