ABSTRACT

This paper aims to propose practical guidelines for the development of materials for medical interpreter training on the basis of medical discourse analysis. As indicated in the curriculum of medical interpreter training implemented by a national healthcare training institute, medical interpreters are required to acquire a high level of medical knowledge including technical terms. While they have a six month period of study to master medical interpreting skills, they have to spend half of the curriculum time to study medical knowledge and terms. In order to maximize the effect of training, the paper looks into the real medical situations where dialogues between the doctor and the patient are recorded and analyzed to study the context and language strategies that the medical interpreters will deal with. Based on the results of the medical discourse analysis, the paper proposes who should develop materials, and the balance between medical knowledge education and interpreting practice. Specific language matters like politeness are also identified to be included in medical interpreter training. The results of the study will contribute to the development of materials not only for medical interpreting, but also for other special interpreting fields such as legal interpreting by presenting discourse analysis as the basis of materials development.
