On the basis of five aspects which are politics and academics, foundation and research, “under the guise” and misuse of “under the guise”, system and fashion, retrospect and prospect, this thesis aims tentatively to analyze comprehensively as well as incisively some of the problems that might exist in Chinese linguistic research over the past a hundred years. Moreover, the author hopes that this paper might draw the attention of academia and thus facilitates the wholesome development of mandarin Chinese research. This paper was also presented at the linguistic forum The future path of the development of Linguistic research that were jointly sponsored by School of Liberal Arts, Tian Jin Normal University, Department of Chinese Language and Literature, Beijing University as well as Hong Kong Chinese Lexicographical Publishing House during May 11th- May 14th, 2007 in Tian Jin, China.About the Author: Han Chenqi is a Professor and advisor to doctoral candidates who was also one of the co-founders of the doctoral program of mandarin Linguistics and Etymology in the School of Liberal Arts, Renmin University of China. Currently, he is a visiting professor at Seoul Women’s University. His areas of expertise fall in mandarin linguistics and etymology, the history of mandarin Chinese, the history of Chinese linguistics. He was the chairperson of Linguistics Association for Jiang Su province between 1997 and 2005 and director of Chinese Linguistics Association.
